I recently exited the freeway from the north at the New Gisborne exit, and was stunned to run into stopped traffic at the southern freeway exit roundabout. It took a while for the traffic to move down the hill into Gisborne, where it became apparent that heavy traffic from all directions at the Robertson St roundabout was the cause of the congestion. Being such a small roundabout wasn't helping, as many drivers seem to struggle to maintain traffic flow when there are so few opportunities to enter it. No doubt a traffic light will be installed at some stage, but with only a single lane on the only thoroughfare to the north, it is hard to see much improvement. Road infrastructure planning in and around Gisborne is sadly lacking in my opinion.
